How much is too much?

This summer I am home with my 9 year old son. He isn’t the type of kid to entertain himself. So, I find myself trying to find ways to keep him busy and off of electronics all day. The struggle is real. How much is too much technology? Not having read any articles on this topic, I am left to use my own judgement. Recently I noticed a pattern……he would wake up in the morning and immediately either watch TV or play on his I-pad. Nothing was educational……nonsense TV and nonsense games on the I-pad or watching videos on You Tube. Is this what being a 9 year old has come to? I found myself getting frustrated at his lack of motivation for reading and practicing his math facts or doing anything creative for that matter. Am I asking for too much? After all, it is summer time. It should be a time of fun and not having responsibilities, right?
I am aware of the “summer slide” where kids inevitably slide back a couple of levels in reading and math. I am just trying to provide a balance for my son without him getting frustrated that it seems like school time in the summer and understanding that summer time can be fun but there are times when works has to be done. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is a good question. We try very hard to limit the technology exposure for our kids. Some times it is simply the easiest way to occupy kids so we can something done!
