Tips for New Grandparents

Everyone in the family has been waiting for the new baby to arrive and now the time has come. As a new grandparent, you’ve probably spent a lot of time thinking about what kind of grandparent you want to be. It is important that you have prepared yourself and thought about how to best participate in the development of your grandchild. You’ll get the hang of it over time. But for now, here are a few tips for new grandparents.

Tips for New Grandparents

When a new baby arrives, grandparents can help by looking after the baby to allow the parents to have a much needed rest. You can also help by doing chores and errands. This will allow mom and dad more time to get to know their new baby. If the baby is lucky enough to have four (or more) grandparents, you will need to figure out a plan so that everyone gets a piece of the action without stepping on each others’ toes. Keep in mind that a large group of relatives visiting at the same time can be overwhelming for both the baby and the parents.

It’s also important to communicate with the parents early on. Make sure you all are on the same page when it comes to parenting styles and grandparenting styles. Don’t assume that they will want to raise their children the same way you raised them. Times change. And so do parenting strategies and social norms. Talking with the parents about your involvement as a grandparent can be challenging after the baby has already arrived so be sure to sit down with the parents prior to the baby’s birth and have a nice long conversation about it. Set some common boundaries and expectations. Communication is key. It will ensure that everything goes smoothly during this stressful (but wonderfully exciting) transition.
