Sexism is one of those topics that can easily frustrate most people to the point of being too flabbergasted to know what to say about it. It would be nice to think that in this day and age, people are given an equal chance based on their skills and abilities, not their gender. With that being said, there are still plenty of places where that is simply not the case. Ask any woman who has ever worked in a predominantly male career, and she will likely tell you that women still aren’t treated the same as men. Is this fair? Absolutely not, but it does happen. To make matters worse, a lot of women have to put up with certain individuals who openly and loudly let their feelings be known that women simply don’t belong in certain things, at least according to them. The bigger question is, how do you help your kids realize that while they certainly can’t control what others think or say, they can control their own destiny by accomplishing anything they want, as long as they set their minds to it.
It is a sad fact that sexism still exists. Unfortunately, there are some men who staunchly believe that women should have no voice, nor should they be able to hold whatever job they choose. More surprisingly, even some women prescribe to these same views. Even though it is an uncomfortable topic to talk about, it is necessary. The last thing you want to have happen is for your daughter to decide on a challenging career and then give it all up, simply because she listened to someone who told her it couldn’t be done because of her gender.
Sexism exists in many capacities. People seem to have a tendency to target others who are different from them. As a result, people are often told that they can’t achieve their goals which are actually perfectly achievable with a little hard work. If you don’t have the conversation with your kids about sexism, they just might fall prey to someone who unfairly tells them what they think they can and can’t do.
