Starting a Conversation About Drinking and Driving

If you are a parent of a child who is quickly growing older, you might find yourself feeling scared for all that the future will bring. You want your child to be safe at all times and you wish that you could ensure that that would be the case. The truth is, your children will be put in dangerous situations, and sometimes they will even put themselves into those kinds of situations. You need to discuss drinking and driving with your children, and it is important for you to know how you can best do that.

Begin your drinking and driving discussion with the facts, but do not stop there. Start your discussion by explaining to your child just how many lives are lost each year through drinking and driving. Let your child know that any amount of alcohol can hinder their ability to drive in a safe manner. Make sure that your child knows all of the consequences that are out there for those who drink and drive – especially for underage drinkers. Choose to let your child know the facts. After you have shared the facts about drinking and driving, then you need to get heartfelt. You need to let your child know how much you care about them and how much it would hurt you if they were injured by someone’s decision to drink and drive.

Make sure that your child understands the dangers of drinking and driving, and then encourage them to be bold in regard to the way that they deal with the information that you have given them. Let your child know that you expect them to stop their friends when they are about to do something as dangerous as drinking and driving. Let your child know that you will trust them to make smart decisions and to speak up when they need to.
